Black Canyon Coffee

Standard

Cucok buat cuaca panas begini. Pilihan lain ada cappuccino, frappucino, Mexican coffee, hot/ice chocolate, etc. Untuk netralisasi rasa saya juga order Chamomile Tea (IDR 20k).

coffee & tea black canyon

Segaaarr! Pas untuk menu pembuka. Jenis salad lain: Spicy Apple Salad, Thai Mango Salad.

spicy glass noodles black canyon

Disini juga menyediakan menu steak, Indonesian food (oxtail soup, ayam bakar, traditional mie goreng), aneka menu nasi ala Thai (rice with garlic tauco chicken, rice with dried green curry chicken), Thai style Fried Noodle with Prawn/Chicken/Seafood), Curries/Soups (chicken green curry, tom yum soup, clear soup, spicy prawn soup). Ada juga jenis menu yang dapat dinikmati dengan nasi putih seperti: boiled fish with spicy seafood sauce, stir fried chicken with cashew nuts, fried chicken with garlic taucho sauce, stir fried mixed vegetables in oyster sauce. Kalau ajak anak-anak bisa dipesankan cemilan ala Western seperti: mixed fries, chicken wings, crab croquette, thai green curry fish cake, Thai prawn spring roll. Kalau suka pasta juga bisa order Carbonara, Pasta with Sausage & Chili paste, spaghetti Bolognaise.

Over all sih kualitas hidangannya okay, ambience desain interiornya juga cukup nyaman untuk sekedar menghabiskan waktu bersama keluarga atau teman.

Gudeg Mbarek Bu Hj.Amad

Standard

Gudeg is a traditional food from Yogyakarta & Central Java. Gudeg is made from young jack fruit (called gori) boiled with palm sugar & coconut milk for several hours. The other ingredients such as garlic, shallot, candlenut, coriander, galangal, bay leaves and teak leaves giving a reddish brown color to the dish.

Gudeg usually served with white rice, chicken, hard boiled egg, tofu/tempe and a stew made of crisp beef skins (sambal goreng krecek). The most common Gudeg from Yogyakarta is usually sweeter, drier and reddish in color. Gudeg is traditionally associated with Yogyakarta, and Yogyakarta is sometimes nicknamed “Kota Gudeg” (city of gudeg).

I don’t really enjoy eating sweet dishes, except for dessert of course. So I’m looking for gudeg which can suitable to my appetite, not too sweet. I found it at Gudeg Mbarek Bu Hj.Amad.

Gudeg Bu Amad

People on Central Java have a habit to have a breakfast on the early morning. I think it’s a good habit, right? So at 7 A.M., I’ve already on my way to have breakfast in here by taxi. Gudeg Mbarek Bu Hj.Amad started since 1965 and located on the Gajah Mada University area. It’s famous with savory taste of dry gudeg.

Gudeg Bu Amad2

I order a portion of gudeg, sambal goreng krecek, hard boiled egg & shredded chicken. Price 14 K. The savory of gudeg and the spiciness of sambal krecek blended perfectly on my mouth. Yummy!

Gudeg Ayam Suwir

I also bring one package as a gift to my family. I choose package D (gudeg + 3 pcs hard boiled egg + chicken wings + chicken heart/gizzard + sambal goreng krecek) for only 45 K.

Ayam / Bebek Goreng Tojoyo 3

Standard

This restaurant is one of my family’s favorite place to eat fried chicken beside Ayam Mbok Berek. Located on the highway, Tojoyo is very easy to find.

Tojoyo

I order their fried chicken (Price 9 K for breast/thigh, 5 K for chicken head), beef lung, intestines, spleen (Price 9 K), fried tempe (Price 3 K) & Sayur Asem (Price 8 K). The chicken is deep fried, so it taste so crispy at outside but tender inside. Very scrumptious! But the beef intestines is not good. It’s so hard to chew, because they fried it too long. The best intestines I’ve ever tasted in still at Nasi Uduk Babe Saman-Joglo.

Fried Chicken

But over all, it’s quite yummy and cheap in price. For 4 person portion I only pay 92 K.

Warung Es Buah Pak Jon

Standard

My mom knew this place since a very long time, because we use to visit my grandma, who has passed away 12 years ago, at Kranggan area. Located near the high school, this stall is very crowded, especially on this hot weather.

Warung Pak Jon

Warung Pak Jon 2

I order their specialty: Es Buah. It’s made from coconut meat, avocado, jackfruit, melon, sawo, dragonfruit , guava & grassjelly with condensate chocolate milk. Quite refreshing, but I prefer if they pour the fresh fruits with cocopandan syrup or liquid sugar with lemon/lime squeeze, more suitable I think.

Es Buah

Then I also order Es Rujak. The ingredients are mango, cucumber, pineapple, guava, papaya, jackfruit with blended brown/java sugar-shrimp paste & chili. It has a rich taste: sour, sweet, salt & spicy at the same time. Very delicious! Refreshing!

Es Rujak

For 5 portion ice I only pay 29 K. Very cheap!

House of Raminten

Standard

This is the place that I’ve planned it for so long to visit when I’m in Yogya. A Gay Café! That’s what I’ve heard before. House of Raminten, the name itself is combining between western & traditional. The decoration is totally adapted Java design interior. The café’s ambience is so mystique, completed with sesajen (offerings to their idol god in the form of flowers/fruits) & strong smelly incense.

In front of the café & inside that place, there’s a big portrait of Chinese Old Lady with glasses who wear the traditional Java wardrobe, fully make up with bun head. Everybody said that’s the face of Raminten. Raminten is actually a man who has the real name Hamzah HS. According to the public issues, he has a revelation from the ruler of south sea spirit, Nyi Roro Kidul,  to change his identity to woman named Raminten. But Hamzah said through the interview that Raminten is derived from figure which played by him on the comedy show at Yogya TV. Which is the truth? Nobody knows….It’s still become a mystery until now.

House of Raminten

There are 3 traditional royal chariots at the waiting room. You can ride in only on Sunday at Wage day (ancient java calendar). All of the waitress wear the traditional java uniform. They use Handy Talky to communicate with each other. Very unique & modern at the same time. What I also heard that all the waitress are gay. Wow!

Kereta Kencana

I came here only look for dessert, because the weather is extremely hot & my tummy is already full. So I order Avocado Juice. It came in the big glass. Price 11 K.

Avocado Juice

I also order Es Cendol/Dawet.  Price 8 K. It’s made from rice flour, slices of young coconut meat, grass jelly & jackfruit. The rice flour or cendol is too soft and tasteless. I think it’s a bad version of Es Cendol. Sorry…

Es Cendol

The main dish recommendation in here is Sego Kucing (Cat Rice). That means they give you a small portion like your cat/pet meal portion. It usually served with shrimp paste chili, orek tempe (tempe sautéed with onion & chili), fried egg & fish. The price is so extremely cheap.

They also served the beverage with the unique glass. If you order Wedang Serai (Hot Lemongrass), it came with the glass with 40 cm height. You have to stand if you want to drink it, haha….And if you order any beverage that contain milk, they will give you a ceramic glass woman breast-shaped. That’s true! Curious now?

Lotek dan Gado Gado Bu Ning

Standard

Bu Ning, who has the full name Sawijiningsih, is the legend of Lotek & Gado-Gado world at Yogyakarta. She’s started her business since 1983 and until now this place still become the favorite place to many people. Located only a couple meters from Lapas Wirogunan, Taman Siswa. You can reach this place only for 10 minutes from Malioboro or Kraton Yogya.

Lotek & Gado2 Bu Ning

If you never knew about Lotek, well, you can call it “Indonesian Salad”. It made from boiled spinach, watercress, cabbage, bean sprout, string bean and mixed with blended peanut, cayenne chili, java/brown sugar, tamarind & kaempferia galanga. The seasoning is almost similar with Gado-Gado or Pecel. If you pay attention, when you come to this place you will find 3 huge mortars made from stone. They can mix the sauce & veggies in that mortar for 5-10 portions. The diameter is about 80 cm.

Of course I wanna try their famous Lotek. I think Bu Ning’s version is too sweet for me. The veggies is perfectly boiled, but the blended peanut sauce is too much watery. Not my favorite one.

Lotek

The veggies fritter & fried tempe in here is so good. Served while still hot, it tasted so crispy and savory. Yummy! I ate 3 pieces, wow….wanna eat some more, but I remember that I’m still on diet, haha….

Bakwan & Tempe

I also order Nasi Liwet. That’s rice that steamed with coconut milk and topped with spicy chayote, boiled egg and shredded chicken. Quite tasty, but it’s not the best version of Nasi Liwet.

Nasi Liwet

For 4 portion of main dishes and 6 pieces of fried snack, I only pay for 46 K. Very cheap! They also serve Soto Ayam, Nasi Goreng Jawa (Java Fried Rice), Ayam Goreng Kremes (Crispy Fried Chicken), Es Campur (Mix Fruit Ice with Grass Jelly & milk syrup), Es Teler (ice avocado-coconut meat-jackfruit), etc.

Jejamuran

Standard

Jejamuran (in English: Assorted Mushrooms) is served all kind of mushroom dishes with Indonesian traditional cuisine style. They use jamur tiram (oyster mushroom/pleorotus ostreatus), jamur merang (volvariella volvacea), jamur shitake (shitake mushroom/lentinula edodes), jamur kancing (fungi studs/agaricus bisporus), jamur Lingzhi (lingzhi mushroom), etc, as their main ingredients.  With the large area and many kind of dishes to choose, this place is attract many visitor or tourist like me.

Jejamuran

According to Mr. Ratijdo, as the owner of Jejamuran, this restaurant is developed from the mushroom seeding establishment since 1997. That’s why at the back side of this area they presented the assorted kind of mushrooms in the bag log. You can ask the resto personnel to explain much further about that stuff.

Mushrooms

For appetizer, I choose Lumpia Jamur (Mushroom Spring Rolls). Price 3.2 K for 2 pieces. The mushroom fill in is savory. Taste okay!

Lumpia Jamur

For soup, I try Sup Tom Yum Jamur (Mushroom Tom Yum Soup). Price 18.2 K. I think the soup is tasteless, not a right combination of seasoning to make a bowl of tom yum.

Sup Tom Yam Jamur

Sate Jamur Tiram (Oyster Mushroom Satay) is my next dish. Price 18.2 K. They grilled the mushroom and give the peanut sauce on top. The peanut sauce is too sweet. So I added the cayenne chili to reduce its sweetness.

Sate Jamur

Next order: Pepes Shitake (steamed shitake mushroom with special indonesian seasoning). Price 16.4 K. The seasoning is made from garlic, red onion, ginger, turmeric, pecans, chili. Wrap that seasoning with shitake mushroom on the banana leaves & steamed it. Quite good!

Pepes Shitake

Next dish: Rendang Jamur (Mushroom Rendang). Price 8.2 K. Rendang is the authentic dish from Padang (a city from Indonesia that famous with its spicy cuisine). Rendang seasoning is made from coconut milk, lemongrass, turmeric, orange leaves, red chili, red onion, garlic, pecans, ginger, tamarind and galingale. Complicated, huh? Taste quite yummy!

Rendang Jamur

Then, the standard dish: Jamur Goreng Tepung Portabella (deep fried portabella mushroom). Price 10 K. Eat it while still hot with chili sauce. Nom…nom…!

Portabello Goreng

The last dish: Jamur Goreng Penyet (deep fried mushroom with chili). Price 12.8 K. They fried the mushroom and then sautéed it with the spicy chili & shrimp paste. Delicious! Perfect if you eat it with the hot steamed rice!

Jamur Goreng Penyet

Over all, the dishes taste are quite delicious and very cheap at price! Must visit!

Bale Raos

Standard

The icon of this cultural city is represented by the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. The Yogyakarta society is really respect & love their Royal Family of Sultana. As a cultural centre, the Sultana Palace (we usually called it as: Kraton) describing the history, the tradition and also the mystical part of Nyi Roro Kidul, the legendary Indonesian spirit, known as the Queen of the Southern Sea of Java. Sometimes she is referred as one of the spiritual queens or wives of the Sultan of Yogyakarta. Her literal positioning is considered as corresponding to the Merapi-Kraton-South Sea axis in Yogyakarta Sultanate.

GKR Hemas, the Queen of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, who is reigning today, want to conserve the richness of Kraton culinary & open the access to the society to know about the Royal Palace dishes. This is the vision of the establishment of Bale Raos.

Located at the Kedaton area, with the structure of Joglo architecture and Kraton ornament, added the viscosity of their culinary. The restaurant has an open air concept, no air conditioner (AC) provided at all plus the heat of sun at this season; that combination is really make me sweat all over my body. I hate it!

Bale Raos

I straightly go to this restaurant from the airport. It’s already 2 PM, and I really feel so starving! For beverage I tried Hot Secang. Price 8 K. It’s made of secang wood shaving which produce red dye in combination with ginger, clove & citronella. Taste so sweet with the exotic & warm flavor.

Hot Secang

For veggies, I order Oseng Daun Pepaya (papaya leaves sautéed with chili). Price 13.5 K. The papaya leaves taste not too bitter, the seasoning also is not too spicy, more likely to feel sweet. Fyi, the central java cuisine is preferred to taste sweet. Quite good.

Oseng Daun Pepaya

For first main course, I order Bestik Djawa. Price 45 K. It’s a Javanese chop beef steak at light sweet soy sauce served with mash potato grilled and buttered veggies. The chop beef steak is savory, blended well with the sauce. Taste okay!

Bestik Djawa

Second dish: Bestik Lidah. Price 45 K. That’s a plate of beef tongue steak in mushroom sauce, granulate butter steamed potato and mixed chopped veggies in dressing milk. The beef tongue is tender, the sauce is too sweet for me, but it’s taste good if I combine it with the dressing milk’s veggies.

Bestik Lidah

The last dish is Urip Urip Gulung. Price 25 K. That’s 5 pieces of fry and grill catfish roll served with turmeric gravy in light spicy taste. They give the sweet soy sauce on top, eat it with its gravy sauce and combine it with the spiciness of cayenne chili. You have 3 flavors in one bite: sweet, salty & spicy! It will be perfect if they remove the barbs of the catfish.
