Warung Mbah Jingkrak

It’s rare nowadays to find the restaurant that served Javanese Food only at Jakarta area. Maybe they think that kind of dishes is not popular among the Jakarta people. Warung Mbah Jingkrak tear down that thought. Because in fact, there’s many immigrants from Java island that works in Jakarta.

I don’t know why they named it Mbah Jingkrak. If I translate in English, it means Old Lady that like to jump. Maybe it’s describes her personality that always cheers and like to hearty laugh until her toothless visible. She also wore the traditional Java wardrobe (kebaya & sarung) with her bun and kelom (traditional java sandal). You can see the figure statue in front of their restaurant.

Simple design wood table and chair, dominated with brown color, create the rural atmosphere. Especially with the sound of water flows coming from stone vase shower. They also build a small size of water falling on backyard. Nice!

Many option of Javanese dishes that served in this restaurant. They also cooked the soup dishes like Lodeh, Rawon, etc.

Today I want to eat their specialty dish: Ayam Rambut Setan. Price 18 K per piece. It has a funny name. Devil’s Hair Chicken on English translation. Haha….Because the kemangi leaves and the red color of chayenne chili made the appearance looked like the devil’s hair. And it’s also describes that this dish is extremely spicy. The chicken meat is quite tough to bite. The taste is truly spicy and savory. Quite good.

Next, I order the iconic Java dish: Sayur Mangut Tahu. Price 15 K. It’s made from smoked fish with tofu or tempeh, cooked with coconut milk. The soup is lack of spices. Quite tasteless, I think, sorry….because I’ve tasted a better version of this dish at other place.

And then I also choose Sambal Goreng Koyor (spicy ox vein). Price 9 K (for half portion). The ox vein is tender, but the sauce is too sweet for me. It will be more suitable if they added a little bit of salty flavor. But it’s Central Javanese dish that famous with their sweet dishes, right? For your info, the other part of Java, the East Java, has a different flavor from Central Java. They are specialty with salty and savory dishes.

For veggies I order Oseng Pare (stir fried bitter melon). Price 10 K. It’s taste very savory and not too bitter. They sautéed it with Medan salted fish. I like it so much. This is one of my favorite dish on this place.

Other veggies dish I ate is Oseng Kangkung (stir fried watercress). Price 7 K. It’s nothing special about this dish. It’s taste so so.

For dessert, I usually order Es Lilin from Njonja Besar. Today I order Durian and Avocado Ice Cream with Thin Slice Chocolate outside. Price 6 K per piece. Nom nom!
